Haworth: Day Two (Sunday)

Reading time: 2 minutes...

I didn’t get up until almost 8am – brilliant! A quick peek through the curtains revealed a grey day, although it was, at least, dry!

We feasted on M and S thick-cut bacon sandwiches for breakfast and then drove over to Skipton to have a general look around.

An owl in SkiptonParking was easy and we were soon freezing our bits off walking around the town – it was f-f-f-freezing!!! We sought refuge in part of the street market that was undercover and where crowds were gathering. The attraction?, the place was full of rare birds – but owls mainly. They all seemed to be perfectly relaxed surrounded by scores of us all trying to get photos.

After that we went back out into the elements and took a brisk walk around Siberia’s Skipton’s shops. There wasn’t much, but we did discover we could ’drop down a level’ and walk along the canal-path – less crowded and where were also shielded from the wind – perfect then!

Some of the canal-boats were dressed-up in various WWII livery presumably for some competition later in the day – it did look strange seeing them covered in camouflage and sporting gun turrets!

At just about the point that I thought my ears and hands were going to fall-off because of the cold, we decided to head back to the car. Phew!

P1010173 Next stop, Bolton Abbey, owned by the Duke of Devonshire. Once again, parking was dead easy, although I did manage to over-shoot the ‘man-in-the-box’ who needed paying!

Once parked, we braved P1010175 the elements – I think was even colder here than Skipton, and you could tell the locals – shorts and t-shirts…whilst  we wandered around in top-coats and scarves. After a quick wander round, we took sanctuary in the P1010177 nearby ‘Tea Cottage’ for a quick bite to eat. The place was heaving, but we got served eventually – and we got the table by the radiator too!

Then, after stuffing ourselves, it was back in the car for the scenic tour back to Haworth via hundreds of sheep and miles of dry-stone walls – lovely!

We topped up with petrol at the local Sainsbury’s (remember them?) and then headed back to Hillside Cottage. Time for feet-up, a slice of cake, a cuppa and a long read of the Sunday papers.

P1010182 …but just before we got too comfortable, we decided to take the short walk to Haworth’s Main Street and scale the hill to the top where the Brontë Parsonage and the Brontë Museum resides. Ten oxygen-sapping minutes later and we made it to the top 🙂 The Parsonage is where the Brontë sisters did their writing – Jane Eyre amongst many others. Job done, and we then descended the summit and headed back to the warmth of the cottage. It’s still f-f-f-freezing up here today…more like February than May! Brrrrr!

We’re eating-in tonight, courtesy of M and S and good bottle of red!

We’re undecided about tomorrow as it depends a lot on the weather and a strategy to avoid hoards of screaming sprogs, (as it’s a bank-holiday).
