Film: Wonder Woman 1984

Reading time: 2 minutes...

With all the bad news around at the moment, I guess we could all do with an uplifting movie! This one doesn’t disappoint (even if you’re not into super-hero stuff!). Actually, it was just great to go out! 😊

All Cineworld cinemas are temporarily closed because of you-know-what, so we drove to the local Odeon in Kettering to catch the latest in the Wonder Woman franchise – Wonder Woman 1984 starring ex-Miss Israel and Model, Gil Gadot in the lead role.

It’s been a while getting here though! The UK release date was originally planned for earlier this year in June, but postponed more than once, because of the pandemic.

Jo and Janet joined us (in a socially-distanced way of course!) and apart from four others, we had the whole screen to ourselves!? In fact, based on the dozen or so cars in the car-park, I’ve NEVER seen the Odeon so empty!

Our own private screening (almost!)

The sequel has a lot to live up to, as the original movie (spookily titled, Wonder Woman) was very well-received by audiences and film-buffs alike. We saw it back in 2017, but strangely, not at the cinema, instead on Sky. I can’t think why we didn’t see it on the big screen!

For completists, this is the ninth of DC Comic’s Extended Universe movies. The series began with Man of Steel (2013) followed by Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice (2016) then Suicide Squad (2016), Wonder Woman (2017); Justice League (2017), Aquaman (2018), Shazam! (2019) and Birds of Prey (2020). Of all of these, Shazam was pretty dire and easily the worst film I’d seen in a long time! 😯

DC Extended Universe (DCEU) has never been as popular as its Marvel stable-mate, and the original Wonder Woman film is generally credited for re-invigorating the DCEU’s movie franchise after the disappointing fan and critic reaction from its earliest offerings. Directing duties once again are competently handled by Patty Jenkins who did such a great job with the original.

Set in 1984 (how do they think up the titles for this stuff?) the two big shocks are: a reminder of the highs (and lows) of 80s fashion plus the return of a character who was killed in the original movie. I won’t reveal how they pulled off the latter here, but safe-to-say, our heroine’s love-interest is re-ignited – and pivotal to the plot!

This $200m blockbuster is a long one, clocking-in at 2 hours and 31 minutes — but it’s worth it! Action, humour, a decent baddie, incredible SFX, and music by the legendary Hans Zimmer all come together perfectly.

I also won’t reveal the plot (there are gazillions of other sites that’ll do that), but it’s a ‘jolly romp’. Ann thought it “started well, but went downhill“. I enjoyed it all, except perhaps for the sugary-sweet final act. Our American cousins will love that part though! 🙄

All-in-all, the perfect tonic for how we’re all feeling right now! Uplifting with a powerful message for us all…

…be careful what you wish for… 🤔

And if that’s not enough, there’s the now familiar ‘mid-credits’ scene, that’s worth sticking around for, especially if you are of a certain age! 😊

Enjoy!!! 👍👍
