John Lewis Christmas Advert (2020)

Reading time: < 1 minutes...

It’s 8am on Friday, November 13, 2020 and if the rumours are true, the John Lewis Christmas Advert for 2020 has just been released.

They ARE true! 😁

This year’s production is called “A Little Love” and its release officially signals the beginning of the Christmas Shopping season.

The advert is being used to promote their Give a Little Love charity campaign. It aims to raise £5m over Christmas to help 100,000 families through the food redistribution charity FareShare and Home-Start and other charities chosen locally by stores.

With Coronavirus and ‘Lockdown 2.0’ playing havoc with everyone’s lives – at work and at play – there was even talk of JL abandoning this year’s production altogether!

I’m glad they didn’t as this year’s theme is ‘kindness’ – and that seems wholly appropriate at the moment! 🤔

2020’s festive offering is a mix of live action and animation (where JL commissioned nine different artists showcasing their differing range of animation styles, including claymation, felt and CGI).

Given that retail has taken such a hammering this year, it’s no surprise that less money has been spent on the production compared with previous years. The result has created a two-minute treat that’s a slight departure from previous years – less epic, a more local feel, whilst for this viewer, not so much of a tear-jerker (which is maybe a good thing as there’s enough sadness currently around!).

Who’s the Singer?

It’s complemented with a soundtrack featuring an original song by the Brit Award ‘Rising Star’ winner Celeste.
