The Countryman (again!)

Reading time: 2 minutes...

This is fast becoming my most frequently visited pub in recent months. We’re here in Staverton and the very understated ‘The Countryman‘ Pub and Restaurant.

It’s always a good sign when you arrive in a Pub car park, just 15 minutes after opening – and it’s pretty much already full! OK, it’s not the biggest of car parks, but there had to be 15 vehicles already parked with their owners inside.

Today was part of our usual three-monthly catch-up with ex-business colleagues, Ian and Mags plus their partners Ann and Alan. The venue is a well-oiled machine, where my first visit was back in 2008 (a client lunch) and my most recent, as part of my 70-70-70 celebrations about a month ago. I reckon I’ve been here over a dozen times and it never disappoints! 👍

Their iconic ‘Specials’ Board

The Specials Board is always worth a look, even though the ‘Classics’ and ‘A la Carte’ menu always impresses!

Plenty of choice!

As expected, it was already fullish in the Restaurant

Another excellent dining experience! This is fast becoming one of our favourite ‘out-of-town’ eateries! So good, in fact, we immediately booked it for our next get-together in late January, next year. By then, the talking point will be Alan & Mags’ holiday to Japan and our trip down the Nile. As we said our goodbyes, a word (or ten) of praise for the excellent waiting staff – always efficient, always smiling and always professional! 👍👏. What a great experience!

We can’t recommend The Countryman highly enough. It quietly gets on with doing a great job, offering great customer service and food that punches well above its weight.

The only negative was our journey home. Being a Friday, we weren’t expecting it to be trouble-free, and it sure lived up to our expectations! ☹️. As we joined the A14 from Welford, ‘Doris’ alerted us to congestion ahead near Rothwell. A swift exit off the main A-road at the next opportunity and a journey to NN15 via the back roads followed. It added about 10-15 minutes to the journey, but we were happily, queue-free for the whole of the diversion.

By 3.45, we were home, enjoying a cuppa! ☕☕. What a great start to the weekend! 👍
