Day 17 β€” Monday, 18th August
NOT Prince Christian Sound, Greenland

Morning, my dedicated readers! πŸ‘πŸ‘

Thanks for all your comments, questions and feedback during this holiday, where our latest travels has seen over 700 reads. As we hit the final week of our unique adventure, outside it’s a drab Monday morning, as we continue sailing north-easterly to Iceland.

If you got around to reading yesterday’s Post, you’ll know that we’ve now had a massive change to the Programme. Prince Christian Sound is OFF due to a mismatch between the weather and our Ship 😑. As a result, the good news is we’re about a day ahead, but it is around 700 miles to Iceland, and none of us really wanted any more ‘Sea Days’.

We’re more than disappointed, as are most of the passengers, but you can’t argue with Mother Nature. It seems that Greenland as a travel destination is somewhat fragile, where the Captain confirmed during today’s noon announcement that the weather was worse last time! 😯😯

It’s the THIRD cancellation this trip, so cue a complete rewrite of the Ship’s on-board entertainment itinerary at the 11th hour (again) resulting in a lot of disorientated passengers this morning. In fact, there was hardly anyone around at all! We think they just stayed under the duvet, thinking ‘there’s nowhere to go!’.

Squeeze us in?

Putting the clocks forward an hour, seemed to have also confused most of our fellow guests this morning, but at least for us, we’re now 60 minutes closer to UK time.

When we arrived at the Discoveries Restaurant just before 8.15, it was almost deserted! Still, that meant we were soon served, and it gave us the time to plan our day ahead.

Browsing through the revised sequence of events today, the high point (apparently) was the ‘Staff Karaoke Night’ (‘Crewoke’!) with the Knitters & Knatters Group‘ getting a mention 😬. Yikes! Shoot me now!! PLEASE! At least they’re not compulsory, and, thoughtfully, they’re not making them available to watch on the TV in our room! Phew! πŸ˜‰.

Ann headed for the Living Room on Deck 10 for the live demonstration by one of the Ship’s Chefs creating ‘Salmon Chowder’ πŸ˜‹πŸ˜‹. Now that was a worthwhile exercise!

With somewhat limited options today (the decks were closed off), elsewhere, there were the continuing lectures enrichment presentations to look forward to: ‘The Lore of the Sea Serpent‘ and ‘Forensic Detectives: Identifying America’s Fallen Heroes‘. We grabbed a coffee and headed for the Cabaret Lounge. It was already 80% full when we arrived – with 15 minutes until Dr Ron was on.

Dr Ron Orenstein in action!

Fascinating stuff! You never know when this information will come in useful! 😁.

We could have listened all day! And more fulfilling than knitting!

The more popular of the two presentations had the Cabaret Lounge packed to capacity! It was literally, standing room only! In all our cruising, I’ve never seen an event like this so popular. Monday’s Factoid: Did you know there is no-one buried in the Unknown Soldier tomb for the Vietnam War at Arlington Cemetery? No? Me neither! πŸ€”

All credit to both Presenters who had been asked to deliver their respective expertise on very short notice. πŸ‘πŸ‘

The Boring Bit!

With our next stop being Reykjavik, Iceland, on Wednesday, thoughts turned to the boring, but necessary task of getting re-packed (or at least starting the process). The forecast there is double-digit temperatures – but only just!

The Boozy Bit

5.45pm: Whilst the girls have enjoyed their daily G&Ts, Ralph and I have developed a liking for the Ship’s PiΓ±a Coladas. They seem to vary a little in look and strength from Bar-to-Bar, but we’ve made staggeringly good progress conducting comparisons! πŸ₯΄πŸ₯΄

We used to be sensible!

The Indian Bit!

6.25pm: With our final posh restaurant visit scheduled for tomorrow, tonight we chose ‘casual’ and visited the Windows CafΓ© on Deck 10 for their ‘Taste of India’ Night.

One of my best Indians EVER!

The Non-Boozy Bit! (Honest!)

7.50pm: Just time for a pre-drink dwinkie! πŸ‘

The End Bit

Living the Dream!

8.15pm: Ralph & Karen went off to see the show whilst we headed to Deck 10 and the Living Room for a Hot Chocolate… and some early Jazz… and then I think we’re done!! It’s been a tough day with all that eating and drinking πŸ₯±πŸ₯±

Seems a shame to delete this… so, just for the record…

About Prince Christian Sound

Our final day in Greenland sees us sailing for Prince Christian Sound. Sounds like a 60’s Fairy Tale Jazz group, but instead, is the name of a waterway here in Southern Greenland. It separates the mainland from Sammisoq (population 0 – they must have known about us!) and other islands of the Cape Farewell Archipelago. The name was given in honour of the Prince, later, King Christian VIII of Denmark.

Tomorrow…

It’s another day at sea tomorrow! For me, the highlights are going to be:-

  • How DNA was used in latter years in the Jack the Ripper case (Part of the ongoing ‘Forensic DNA series’)
  • Our final ‘posh’ nosh opportunity: Aqualina, Deck 10 (Italian)

9.25pm: Sleep well! See you Tuesday!! πŸ’€πŸ’€πŸ’€πŸ’€
