We woke-up to a very misty morning here although the forecast is for a dry but cold day. And cold it was – f-f-f-f-freezing!!! As we boarded the Park and Ride it felt like Winter!
After the short trip into Oxford, we got off the bus right opposite the Westgate Centre – perfect! After a quick look round and a few purchases, we stopped for coffee and then started to look round the Colleges – Christ Church was our stand-out favourite.

We then headed for the Ashmolean Museum. We haven’t been there, since we met up with Lynn R, last year in November.

If you like museums, this is a ‘must-see’. There’s so much in it – statues, paintings and much, much more. As we wandered round the shops we noticed a really old clock, and as it was coming-up to midday and surrounded by tourists, we thought something ‘special’ was going to happen as it struck 12 – err, ‘no’!

Our final stop was M and S to stock-up with food and something for our meal-in tonight.
We caught the bus back around 1pm (as the weather was so dull, it wasn’t worth going anywhere else!) and spent the rest of the day reading.
Just before we had our evening meal, we decided to take a short walk around the local area. Glad we did as we made an unusual discovery! Just up the road near where Coleshill House originally stood, there was a very plain, small box-shaped building. Lucky for us, it was unlocked and on entering, we discovered it was originally the guard house in WWII for the main house. The building was decorated with lots of information about the Auxiliary Units. I’d not not heard of this group of people before but on further reading all the posters, it soon became very clear. According to the Auxiliary Units’ website, they were:
“A secret resistance network of volunteers prepared to be Britain’s last ditch line of defence during World War Two. They operated in a network of cells from hidden underground bases all over the UK.”
Great stuff!!! We headed back to the Cottage feeling chuffed that we’d made this discovery – we could have so easily missed it altogether. There’s some more photographs HERE
Tomorrow, it’s somewhere far less secretive – Cardiff by train!
I got into blogging quite late in life, not publishing my first post until 2004 – well into my 40s! My lifelong love of technology and communication (in all its forms), together with a fondness for the art of writing seemed to be the perfect combination to contribute a few words to the online community.
