I’ve done lots of things in my life – but as far as the more ordinary pursuits are concerned, I’ve never been ten-pin bowling!!

Today, I ticked that box, meeting Paul & Sue for my inaugural match at the local ‘Rock n Bowl Tavern’ in town. Tuesdays turn out to be the best value day to bowl. For just over a tenner, you can stay as long you like (or as long as your bowling arm remains operational – as I was to find out!)

We were allocated our lane and after typing in our names on the consoles we could see the scoreboard above us on the screen. No manual scoring required – the computer did it all, leaving each of us free to perfect our technique. In my case, ANY technique was welcome!!!

I didn’t do too badly during the first frame (for a virgin)! ‘Beginner’s Luck’ or ‘A Natural’. No-one was quite sure how (or why!!) — most of all me!

Then, I think I started to take it all too seriously!

…and my performance plummeted! Mind you, we did have the rails down for this frame – and that affected ALL of us! My additional excuse was that my left shoulder was feeling the extra workout!

By the third, and final frame, I’d improved slightly (go figure!) where I finished in a respectable second place!

In spite of the varying performance levels, we all agreed that it had been great fun. And as a first-timer, I’m pretty sure it’s something we’ll return to later this year! The activity that followed was much less strenuous: We decamped to nearby Miller & Carter for a late and lazy lunch. The food and service was great! We were in no hurry and spent much longer there than we planned (for all the RIGHT reasons) not getting home until around 5pm!!

Hello All! Yes, it’s Monday and the forecast is rain!! – and no, I’m definitely not going to comment on last night’s soccer result! There’s an air of gloom around the hotel this morning!

We became a couple of ‘Jolly Jack Tars’ today, as for our main attraction, we’re visiting the Historic Naval Dockyard in Portsmouth. There’s a lot to see here, with various ticket options that give you access to all/some/just a few attractions – with a price to match. The last time we were both here was way back in July 2009! (although I’d been more recently with my ex-Trainer buddies in July 2018).

Having been so many times before, there was always the law of diminishing returns, but we were both looking forward to the Mary Rose Exhibition that we’d been told had a lot of new exhibits. Outside, the ‘less-than-exciting’ weather limited us a bit, given that it was forecast to deteriorate just after lunch – but it was good to see what parts of the Dockyard had changed.

11.00am: It seems everywhere is all about ‘pre-booking’ and ‘timed tickets’ these days, but we were soon inside and bang on time for our 11 o’clock entry.

11.15am: Our first stop was HMS Warrior, difficult to miss for all the right reasons – an imposing vessel, armed to the teeth.

HMS Warrior is 40-gun steam-powered armoured frigate built for the Royal Navy in 1859–1861…

…complete with its ‘new-tech’ ironclad outer hull. In its day, it was the largest warship in the world and part of 45 ‘iron hulls’ built for the Royal Navy between 1861 and 1877.

It’s been at the Dockyard since the late 1980s and considering it was originally destined for the scrapyard, it’s been exceptionally well restored.

After last night’s soccer result, it didn’t feel appropriate to enjoying anything associated with ‘victory’ – so we gave it a miss. There was quite a long queue too – apart from that, the middle mast was mizzen – and I’m a completist by nature!!!

11.15am: For us, this is what we’d been looking forward to. When we first came here, just after the dinosaurs were wiped out, the Mary Rose Exhibition was nothing more than the Ship in a temporary enclosure being constantly sprayed with preservatives. It wasn’t much to look at, but at the time, we still marvelled (like much of the world) at how they’d recovered the Ship at all!

Fast forward (more than) a few years, and a state-of-the-art Exhibition space now awaits visitors. Not only can you now view the ship across three floors, but there’s also a very comprehensive artefacts’ exhibition too!

…and in recent years they’ve even been analysing the DNA of some of the crew’s bones. This research is eerily brought to life with artists’ impressions of their appearance, together with a comprehensive summary of their lifestyle until that fateful day in the Solent. They even know what the Ship’s dog looked like, its age and likely breed! Incredible!!!

And if that’s not enough, ‘opening soon’ will be a fully interactive, immersive, 3D ‘Mary Rose Experience’. Best bring your swimming trunks!!!

12.35pm: With the rain predicted for 2pm, we quickened our pace and headed for our weekly dose of ‘retail therapy’. Within walking distance is ‘Gunwharf Quays‘ a pretty large retail outlet space. Ann can sniff out a bargain at 100 1000 paces, and we were soon joining the hundreds doing the same (surprisingly, it was VERY busy for a Monday!). M&S was heaving! (so much so that we abandoned our bargains after seeing the 20+ in the queue waiting to pay). Ann had better luck elsewhere and bagged a few big reductions.

1.40pm: We had a final look round, but with our bargains bagged, we headed for the car-park and back to the hotel to beat the showers. Right on cue, at 2pm, it lashed it down, and we felt pretty smug in that if we’d queued in M&S we would have got caught in the downpour on the walk back to the car-park!

2.10pm: Boy, did it rain on the journey back to the Holiday Inn – Biblical!!! . Just time to begin writing this post, freshen-up before heading to Southsea for some ‘Turkish Delight’.

5.30pm: For our evening meal tonight, we went Turkish – and to the Agora restaurant in Southsea. It was highly recommended on TripAdvisor, so we were optimistic of a good experience.

When we arrived at 5.30pm, the Restaurant was empty (it had only just opened!). Twenty minutes later it was 75% full, and by 6.30pm it was packed! Not bad for a very rainy Monday evening ehh??!! By the time we left, just after 7pm, it was full. Not surprisingly, our meal was excellent! – with extra marks for the creaminess of the rice pudding! Wow!

Tomorrow, we say goodbye to Portsmouth and hello to the Isle of Wight.

The post Holiday: Portsmouth and the Isle of Wight – Day 4 appeared first on Steve's Blog.

Ahh, that’s more like it! It felt like ‘pre-Covid days’, socialising with our neighbours over a meal!!

With all the necessary COVID rules strictly adhered to, Paul and Karen invited (just) a few of us round to theirs tonight for a meal and to watch the soccer – we were there to see England play Ukraine in the Euro 2020 quarterfinals.

Karen’s very (very) capable when she wears her chef’s hat, and tonight’s feast was no exception! Featuring TWO mains – chicken and lamb – as well as TWO potato accompaniments and mushrooms, it was all delicious! And with Paul on Bar duties, we were fed and watered with style!!

We contributed to everyone’s waistline by creating a couple of England-inspired desserts…

Ann’s sweet treat was a puff-pastry base, smothered in white chocolate, topped off with whipped cream and decorated with strawberries, arranged to look like the England flag. We called it ‘St George’s Tart’.

I opted for making something a bit far simpler – a humble Peach & Raspberry ‘Peach Melba’ Crumble – with the obligatory England flag too! I called it ‘delicious‘!

And clearly, our Desserts had inspired England’s performance! Not content with scoring within the first four minutes (3′ 34″), the team went on to score three more!!!

After a(nother) crappy year of COVID-related restrictions, this was just what we all needed! Me, being a football expert (not!), I’d say that we had just played our best game for ages!

…and dare I say it: “Footballs coming home”.

Next stop? The semi-finals next week against Denmark. There’s now a real feeling, nationally, we might go all the way!

I caught up with Angela today at the King’s Arms in Tring. The venue was chosen because it was roughly halfway between us.

I thought I knew Tring, but as I approached the town, it all felt very unfamiliar! What a lovely town though! – very leafy, a nice parade of shops and where the houses looked very posh! Our table was booked for noon, but we both arrived early – around 11.30. Trust us to pick a Pub where it didn’t have a car park – I think we each got the last space in the road opposite. So, just time for a quick natter ‘in the street’ before the Pub opened its doors bang on time.

It was great to catch up face-to-face, rather than via Zoom or over the phone – and together with the service and the food, we both had a great time catching up with each other’s news and of course, putting the world right!

We left just before 3pm, but both of us had ‘sticky’ journeys home, meaning we didn’t get in until about 4.45pm.

Just in time for England v Germany, part of (the postponed) Euro 2020 tournament! I needn’t have rushed! Those that know me, know that my soccer knowledge is legendary IMHO, the first half was a bit of a snore-fest, resulting in a nil-nil score after 45 minutes. The best thing was probably the fans’ singing!!!

The second-half initially didn’t feel much better, but it got better (for us anyway!). A momentary increase in blood pressure in the 56th minute (for all the wrong reasons) as Germany’s Werner came far too close to scoring! Then, after 78 minutes, just as Ann commented: “I think this might go to penalties”, along came England’s Sterling to pop one in the back of the net for us! 80 minutes in and a poor pass by England left Germany’s Muller to surely equalise having an almost open goal – luckily for us, he missed! Phew!!! Five minutes later, in the 75th minute, and we scored again, courtesy of Kane. Things were looking up – and England were now on fire!!! After 4 minutes of extra-time, as the whistle blew,

England were victorious! All of this means we’re through to the quarter-finals where we’ll face either Sweden or Ukraine.

Today, was one of those days where things were ‘full-on’!

All good things though, as it was 100% social!!

The Clark’s (Roy, Susan and Lauren) visited us for lunch where Ann had produced miracles in the kitchen with a choice of two starters, two mains and two desserts. Unusually for me, I didn’t take any photos! Must have been the heat (and I don’t mean the heat in the kitchen!) – as they say: ‘Cor! What a skorcher! A lovely day, in every respect.

Then, it was off to Rosi’s for ‘the cheese course’ (our other neighbours – sans Tom, Julie, John & Trish – had been there since lunchtime). This all coincided with England’s first match in the postponed Euro 2020, where we won, 1:0 against Croatia. Again, no photos; again I blame the weather – if the morning had been hot, the late afternoon was still really hot requiring to frequently change positions on Rosi’s patio!

A nice problem to have!

Our busy day caught up with us (poor loves!) and we left just after 8pm! Thanks for hosting things Rosi! It was good to get together after all this time!

With the local residents advised to stay indoors, and the adjacent roads closed or on diversion – it can only mean one thing!

No, not another major crime in Kettering, just Ann and I taking archery lessons!

The coaching is split into two-parts. Part 1 is a class just for us two (as we couldn’t make the official first lesson, last Saturday) whilst Part 2 is where we join the rest of the group to fine-tune our skills. We’d already had a ‘go with a bow’ at our recent Warner Weekend and motivated by the fact we both actually hit the target (and no livestock nor humans were harmed) we’re ready for this!

But are they ready for us?

Part 1 – Friday

4.00pm: We met John Bosworth who will be our Coach. He’s pretty well-known rounds these parts for his archery skills being Chairman of Kettering Archers as well many other archery-related activities. We’re in very safe hands then! We spent a generous two-hours with John at the local Cricket Ground, and learned a lot about the art and science of this sport. We also met a lot of other Club members too! A great evening!

Part 2 – Saturday

10.30am: We arrived at the local Catholic Church (St Edwards) for the concluding part of our Beginner’s Course. It was a full-house, with around another dozen-or-so willing delegates – all ages, from kids to oldies, like us – taking part. Full-marks to Lee for leading today’s session.

There were a number of the Archery Club staff there too – and everyone was very generous with their time.

The three hours passed really quickly, and by the end, we’d had plenty of practice-time to develop our technique. Hats-off to all the Coaches offering their expertise! Plus, we got some very professional handout materials too, to remind us of the key learning points from today…

1.35pm: The Session finished with the presentation of our Certificates…

Overall, it had been a very impressive couple of sessions. First-class tuition from some very nice people too! The next stage is to visit the Club (they meet on Fridays and Sundays) to carry on practising! We’re both up for that!

..and Tennis too… well almost… to OUR home anyway…

We, as a nation, didn’t make it to the finals, but that didn’t stop us having the neighbours round for a very late Lunch – to enjoy the World Cup Final and/or the Tennis Men’s Singles Final.

With record crowds expected at both sporting events, ours was slightly less – 16!!! Some superb planning was required that exhausted most of our cutlery, chairs, oven space and fridge capacity!

Our planning began early – yesterday, in fact, and today’s weather didn’t disappoint! (this warm weather becoming almost regular and predictable).

Most of us watched a little of the Tennis before switching over just before 4pm for the Soccer. I think at this stage, most of us weren’t particularly interested in the nations playing (as England were knocked out at the semis), but it was a good sociable atmosphere – and the imaginative range of food on offer (a massive collaboration between us all) made it a feast to remember. Ann had created enough Moussaka for the whole street as well as some delicious hot chicken-wings. Rosi’s very attractive and delicious fruit-salad was certainly the most visual of treats whilst Stella made a Malteser Cheesecake.

With Karen and Trish on Cheese Duty, whilst Jo and Janet took care of pre-meal nibbles, we were all set.

By 8.45pm, it was all over, and with the dishwasher on overtime – and overnight – we slowly returned the house to its normal state. I think every piece of cutlery was used, as well as most of the glasses. Strangely, hardly any beer was drunk and we had a lot of nibbles left over!

A day socialising today – and just like the World Cup, made up of two halves!

It was a gorgeous day weather-wise and Ann ‘pulled out all the stops’ in the kitchen for a mouth-watering three-courser…

Second half: 3.45pm – Round to Tom and Julie’s to socialise and reflect on England’s match against Panama. The match had kicked-off at 1pm, but none of us (and I don’t count myself as a soccer-expert, but many of the ‘gang’ are!) could have predicted the result! I’m sure I’ll re-read this B|log in years to come and think it’s a typo, but the score finished at…

Yep, that’s SIX goals by our national side. I can’t recall, if ever, we’ve scored that many before, in ANY match, but especially in a World Cup game!!  I think we’ve even won the Cricket against the Ozzies too! Happy days!

Most of the gang were there: Tom , Julie , John, Trish, Paul (sans Karen), Dave (sans Rosi), Julie & Al plus Georgina with many of her friends. We didn’t discuss the match much, preferring instead to enjoy a beer, or three in the continuing fantastic weather.

We stayed until about 7.30, leaving most of the others there to soak up the last of the Sun.

The post A Sunday of Two Halves appeared first on Steve's Blog.

Up until yesterday, the weather throughout our holiday had been almost tropical. Today however, it felt more like temperatures that we’re used to – damp with a just a hint of sunshine! Still, it’s early morning, so there’s plenty of time for it to perk up.

As a quick aside, I see that my conspiracy theory that Curry’s are colluding with all the other countries in the World Cup to ensure they don’t end up paying me much for their ‘cash-for-goals’ promotion seems to be coming true, with just ONE (more) goal scored by England against Uruguay last night. That gives me a grand total of just £20 – and with every sign that we’ll exit the competition at the next game, I can’t see me making a fortune this time around.

Still, I digress, so back to the holiday plans. With the forecast looking progressively duller as the day wears on, we decided to make the most of the morning and head to Roskilde, partially on foot (first, the shortish walk to Copenhagen Station), followed by a short train journey to Roskilde itself. The significance of this location is that it has a famous 12th century Cathedral, where most of the Danish monarchs are buried – so, definitely worth the trip!

Just as we got off the train, the weather fulfilled its crappy potential. First, light rain, followed by the persistent heavier stuff. We trekked over to the tourist-magnet Cathedral to find that today was one of the few days when it didn’t open until 12.30 – and it now only 9.45. Bummer!

A perfect excuse to take refuge in a local coffee-shop – Druedahls – and sample a few of their local pastries!

Then to kill some more time, it was off to the nearby Archbishop’s Palace – but that was closed too, due a national schools’ event encouraging youngsters of Denmark to take more of an interest in the Bible. It was all being taken very seriously, with the adults dressed in period clothing looking (and sounding) the part.

Finally, we got to the Cathedral – it was a very popular place (maybe because it was still raining), but as a World Heritage Site, we felt it was worth battling the weather. The layout inside was quite unique in many ways – we were able to climb the stairs onto a second tier and look down onto the main area – I don’t think we’ve ever seen a Cathedral’s overall design quite like this, with red brick on the outside and a gorgeous variety of designs on the inside. And, as we’ve said, they’d made good use of all the available space inside too. The whole place felt much bigger than it actually was.

Then it was back on the train back to Copenhagen, for a quick lunch, before heading off into town to look at the Town Hall. It looked massive from the outside – and once we got inside, like this morning’s Cathedral, felt even bigger!

Our final stop for the day was the National Museum of Denmark. Unfortunately, a combination of no air conditioning/ventilation and a confusing layout made the visit quite hard work, and we were in-and-out within an hour – without really doing it justice!

By now, we were flagging, so we took a brisk walk back towards the hotel, passing Tivoli Gardens on the way, slightly distracted by the screams from the terrified visitors ‘enjoying themselves’ on the rides! Twenty minutes later, we were back in our room, putting our feet-up for a while, before catching-up with our reading in the now comfortable surroundings of the Bar!

Again, we’re undecided about what to do tomorrow – we’ll see what the weather forecast is like tomorrow morning.
