It was a welcome return to The Saxon Mill in Warwick today for one of our regular three-monthly get-togethers with Ian & Ann and Alan & Mags. The six of us were last here back in February, this year after giving it a break for a year or two.

We set off just after 11.30, and that meant plenty of time to get there. Well, that was the theory! Friday + late morning + A14/M6/A46, what could possibly go wrong? It began well, but a lorry shredding a tyre just before the exit to the A46 meant a substantial tailback, adding nearly 20 minutes to our journey. We eventually arrived just after 12.45 (table booked for 12.30) after negotiating an incredibly busy Saxon Mill car park.

Consequently, we were last to arrive, but it wasn’t long before we were catching up with our friends and all their news.

Given that there’s a feeling, nationally, that everyone is hard up and watching the pennies, someone forgot to tell this lot! – I don’t think I’ve ever seen Saxon Mill so busy! Good to know, and we were soon perusing their Menu that sported a 2 or 3 course menu (great value at just £21.95 or £25.95 respectively plus the usual à la carte option). This all meant there was a fair amount of choice in front of us. Decisions made, we now had to get someone’s attention. Maybe due to how busy they were, service was a bit sluggish, but it came (eventually) with a smile from our Server, who was clearly enjoying his job!

It all went down a treat with my choice offering some of the tastiest bangers I’ve eaten in a long time!

It was (just as it should be) a very relaxed Lunch as we spent nearly two hours chatting over this and that including UK Passport Control, Thunderbirds, Second Thoughts productions and Ian & Ann’s impending arrival of half of Australia! (well, not quite!).

After paying the bill (just under £67 per couple) we headed to the car park, said our goodbyes and contemplated what our journey might be like in reverse on a Friday afternoon. Actually, it was hassle-free, and we were home in just under an hour.

Next time, we’re meeting at Ascoughs Bistro in Market Harborough as part of my forthcoming 70-70-70 celebrations.

Off to The Fox Inn in nearby Thorpe Waterville. It’s our regular catch-up with (very) long-time friends, Mick & Jane

The Fox Inn has been receiving good reviews of late, and we thought we’d give it a go, having not been there (I think) since April 2019! The Pub gets a lot of passing traffic but has seen quite a few owners over the years. In the latest round of ‘Pass the Pub’, it had remained closed for over a year and finally re-opened in October 2025, having been bought from the Brewery.

It was already fairly busy when we arrived just before 1pm. We were soon shown to our table for four by the window and ordered our drinks whilst we perused their menus. For us, it ALL looked yummy, and it therefore didn’t take us long to make up our minds.

Our friends arrived shortly afterwards, and with our choices now made, we spent some quality time catching up with everyone’s news.

Well, that all went down a treat! The food had always been very good here, but today’s was exceptional! If they keep serving food of this quality, then they deserve to be a success! . We were all too full for a Dessert… or even teas and coffees, so we chatted for a while, then settled the bill – and said our goodbyes until the next time.

It was a straightforward journey home for us, but we chose the back-roads having spotted a potential jam on the opposite carriageway on the A14 on our way to the Pub. Mick decided to cycle home whilst Jane took the wheel of their Beemer.

It was back to the Saxon Mill in Warwick today to catch up with Ian & Ann and Alan & Mags. We haven’t been here for a few years – last time was in July 2021! Today was all part of our regular three-monthly catchups and it was good to see everyone again.

Pity about the weather though! Will it ever STOP raining? . Even the restaurant had sandbags positioned at strategic points around the outside eating area (not that anyone would have chosen to eat outside today!!)

We were soon seated and tackling the multiple menus that took up most of the space on the table. This initially led to a bit of confusion (me included!), but after a few brief moments of indecision, we all made our choices. Looking around, it was a sure sign of the times that in spite of the massive amount of food choices on offer, there was a distinct lack of customers – I expected it to be busier, given it was a Friday lunchtime . I blame the weather… or the Government (the latter being a popular scapegoat for most of the UK’s problems at the moment!)

You can’t beat a good pie, and today’s was ‘Steak and Malbec’ – a popular choice amongst our group, with three of us opting for this boozy and meaty treat. With the pie quickly consumed and with Lent in the air, it seemed appropriate to limit my intake of the sweet stuff. So, when it came to Dessert, I opted for one of the Mill’s ‘mini-desserts’ (ironically, so large, it hardly fitted on the plate with the custard dish delicately balanced on the side!). The heavyweight ‘mini’ came with a choice of coffees too! A good choice – calories and guilt-free!

In between the eating, it was great, as always, to catch up with the gang, where our various conversations took us from views about customer service experiences in the UK, holiday tips, the joys of decorating and finally, to my recent experience with ‘spiky balls’ at my Pilates Class. Well, you can’t say we don’t live interesting lives!!!

When it came time to settle the bill, we all got away with less than £75 per couple (which is good going these days!) – and we left with a smile on our face, looking forward to our next get-together in three months. We all decided that the Saxon Mill deserved a revisit.

Surprise, surprise, it was still raining when we left, but, it was only an hour back to Kettering, and the traffic seemed light for a Friday. What could possibly go wrong? Well, something wasn’t right, as after getting back on the M6 without issue, the traffic just came to a complete halt. And there we sat for a good 40 minutes. When everything eventually began to move, it wasn’t obvious what the problem had been, apart from a couple of dented vehicles and a pickup truck in a layby. The result? It took nearly TWO hours to get home – and when we pulled onto the drive at home, it was still raining!

Weather aside, it was good to be out and about; we enjoyed the food, and as always, the company. See you next time, Saxon Mill!

We caught up for Lunch with Geoff & Rhonda today.

Our Eatery of choice was the ever-reliable The Olde Victoria in nearby Burton Latimer. We do love this place, having only been there as recently as last Sunday with Carole H for Lunch.

It’s probably our most frequently visited Pub since we moved into the area back in 1996. It wasn’t as busy as last Sunday, where the slightly less manic atmosphere made for a slower, more relaxing experience. The result? An enjoyable meal with plenty of time for a good chat .

Ann: Fish & Chips; Rhon: Steak Burger, Geoff: Bangers & Mash, and I chose their Wagyu Burger. All good decisions where we all enjoyed our respective choices.

Another outstanding meal accompanied by really great service! . Best of all, it was great to catch up with our friends!

Well, both actually!

We took the hour’s drive to Quorn, north of Leicester, to meet up with Ralph & Karen for lunch and a catch-up. Our destination? The Quorndon Fox.

Last time we were here was back in December 2023, again with these two! .

The perfect combo then – great mates and (based on previous visits) great food and service too!

Decisions, decisions!?!?

We skipped Starters and whilst Ralph opted for the ‘Pie of the Day’ (Steak!), we three chose the Roast Turkey. Generous portions followed with Sides of extra Yorkies, Cauliflower Cheese and Pigs in Blankets – generous enough for the cry: ‘I can’t possibly manage a Dessert‘ from one of us!

Err, Desserts then followed for the majority, with Ralph tackling their Apple & Blackberry Crumble, Karen exercising some restraint and picking just three scoops of ice-cream. Meanwhile, Ann and I fought over a single serving of their Millionaires’ Chocolate Fondant. Yum, yum! VERY chocolatey!

It had been a great meal where the service was as sharp as ever! We said our goodbyes just before 2pm and had a trouble-free journey home (although the M1 was quite busy in both directions!). After a quick diversion to Next to ‘click and collect’, we were soon home, in the warm and enjoying a cuppa! .

We do like a bit of variety over Christmas and the new year, so I’m not sure what happened for New Year’s day, 2026!

This time last year, we decided to go for Lunch at The Pheasant at Keyston with longtime friends and neighbours, David and Valerie. And this year?

How about Lunch at The Pheasant with David and Valerie?? Well, it obviously says a lot about our friends and a lot about the Pub too! – a good decision on both counts!

We were soon seated and perusing the Menu. Whilst David picked the Smoked Salmon Starter, the Parsnip & Pear Soup was to die for and certainly prepared Valerie’s, Ann‘s and my tastebuds for the Roast Beef that followed. Meanwhile, David and Valerie opted for the Roast Pork and were equally impressed with their choices. It was all delicious, and if there hadn’t been any Desserts to choose from, it would have still been a great meal. Of course, there were Desserts – and when it came to choosing, it was a 50/50 split. Whilst David and Ann finished with a selection of cheeses, Val and I couldn’t resist the Panettone Bread & Butter Pudding with Brandy Custard. Teas and Coffees completed the very enjoyable experience.

Although they were quiet when we arrived just before 2pm (ahh, we thought, we’ve missed the rush!), it soon filled up during the time we were there. The part of the Restaurant where we were seated can usually accommodate about 40 covers – and I counted 38 customers, just like us, enjoying a really good Lunch. Elsewhere in the Pub, there was hardly any seating left, where there were plenty of staff doing what they do best here.

It had been a long, deliberately slow meal – and just after 4pm, it was time to settle up. Top marks for the service and food here today (especially as they were very busy!), leaving us with a really positive impression of the Pub. In the years we’ve been coming here, it’s lost its mojo a few times, but today (again) it made us feel like The Pheasant has now ‘returned to form’. It was still heaving when we left, and that was surely a good sign!

Here I am at The Countryman in Staverton Village. The Pub is becoming a semi-regular haunt for our three-monthly catch-ups with Ian & Ann and Alan & Mags since discovering it with old work mucker, John ‘Mez’ Merrell, exactly 17 years ago today, back in 2008! . Sadly, Mrs P wasn’t able to make the trip today – she’s caught some sort of cold-type bug!

Why here? It’s pretty much mid-point for all of us, where the food and service has always been excellent. Today was our ‘Christmas’ event after visiting back in January, 2022 and March 2025 then most recently, June 2025. Of course, it was a further opportunity for me to get stuck into another traditional Christmas Meal. In my world, you can never have too much Turkey!

But it wasn’t to be! No sign of a Christmas menu at all – now that was a surprise!

Our table was right next to the mouth-watering Specials Board – some great choices awaited us and for me, more than made up for the lack of festive bird!

If the Specials Board wasn’t enough, there was always their usual Menu choices.

It was a relaxing affair with plenty of time to talk about this-n-that and everything in between, but it did feel strange without Ann being there! . The Pub itself was enjoying a busy lunchtime – if people are ‘tightening their belts’ there was no sign of it here today! . As our lazy get-together came to an end, both the service and food had been memorable as always, in a good way – so good, I forgot to snap a photograph of my main course – Roasted Fillet of North Sea Cod in a White Wine Sauce. Me eating fish??? Surely some mistake! I just fancied it, and it certainly didn’t disappoint!

I left just before 3pm where the drive back was hassle-free, apart from the weather that was a wet as the journey there! . I was home inside an hour.

For our next gathering, in February 2026, we’re returning to Saxon Mill in Warwick.

I’m not sure whether this is a record or not for us? It certainly feels like it – it’s our first official Christmas meal of 2025 – and it’s not even December yet! . Last year, I had to wait until December 7th for my first festive nibble (but c’mon, we had only just returned from New Zealand!) .

Still, in my world, it’s never too early for a Christmas nibble, and I had witnesses to prove it! Step forward Bev & Jules and Jo & Janet, who had the same thought in mind for our Friday night catch-up.

Our eatery of choice was the ever-reliable The Olde Victoria in Burton Latimer where, over the past 20+ years, both the food and service have always been top-notch! It doesn’t offer fine dining but instead, good wholesome pub grub! That suits us!!!

I don’t think we’ve ever seen them busier as by the time we arrived, it was already heaving and consequently it had a real buzz about it. Close to us was a table of 12 on a double celebration – an 80th birthday AND a Christmas menu! Best of all, the staff were doing an amazing job (in spite of the increased numbers), where the service levels were as good as ever. Hat’s off to Matt and his team – it’s a well-oiled machine here, and everything was running as smoothly as ever.

This was our first official Christmas Meal where to save time, we’d pre-booked our choices from a tasty range of options:-

Starters
Baked Camembert/Brixworth Pate/Classic Prawn Cocktail.

Mains
Roast Breast of Norfolk Turkey/Gressingham Duck/Venison, Bacon and Redcurrant Pie.

Desserts
Christmas Pudding/Burnt Basque Cheesecake/Chocolate & Sour Cherry Roulade.

I think collectively, we covered the whole menu, but I avoided Turkey at this early stage for fear of being ‘all turkeyed-out’ by the time the big day is upon us! The Venison Pie was probably the best pie I’ve ever tasted (and we’ve been to Brockleby’s!) with so much meat, the pastry was struggling to contain it! Yum Yum!!

Somehow, between the excellent food courses, we even managed an impromptu Christmas Quiz, and it was surely a good sign that when the courses arrived, and we began to tuck in, there was complete silence! It was all great fun, and I think it ignited the first spark of the Christmas Spirit in all of us! By the time we left, although the restaurant was beginning to quieten down, the Bar area seemed to have every square inch occupied with eaters and drinkers. Whatever Her Majesty is doing, she’s doing it very well!

Well done, The Olde Vic! You didn’t disappoint!

A first visit today to The Fancott Arms in err, Fancott, Toddington

It was time for a catch-up again with longtime mate, Angela C. The location was about halfway between us, and made a pleasant change to our usual haunt of The Bistro just up the road in ‘old’ Toddington.

It was less about the beer and more about the food offer, as this was one of our rare get togethers face to face, having spent most of our year communicating via the infamous Zoom and by telephone!

After grabbing a drink in the very ‘old school’ Bar, we were shown to the dining area. Yikes, we weren’t expecting that! It was massive! And it began to fill up as soon as we were seated. Surely a good sign, especially as it was only Monday!

We had plenty of time to catch up with each other’s news – in fact, we were so busy talking, we skipped dessert and finished with just a coffee.

The food and service didn’t disappoint, and consequently, the Pub is now on our ‘must go back’ list. Our long Lunch gave way to a smooth journey home, and I was indoors by 4pm

Today, we drove over to the Montagu Arms in Barnwell to meet up with Mick and Jane. The last time we were here was back in May this year, also with Mick and Jane. This used to be a very frequent destination ‘back in the day’, but until earlier this year, we hadn’t been back for close on 15 years! We drifted away for no specific reason other than there were lots of other eatery options out there plus the venue went through a period of mediocrity!

I’m pleased to say that when we visited in May, the old magic was back – excellent food and excellent service! . We hoped today would be the same.

The journey there was treacherous. The weather had promised rain, rain and more rain – and it certainly lived up to that promise! . We were first to arrive, where we immediately noticed that the decorators were in. That meant all guests were being diverted to the ‘old’ Bar area. It suited us, as they had arranged a table for us all in front of the wood-burner (that was already working overtime!). Cosy!!

The menu and our food choices didn’t disappoint, even if we had to wait longer than usual to order. The service was faultless, and they even managed to find Ann a large cushion to soften the impact of spine on wood!

All in all, a good experience, and we were well looked after by the staff. We’ll be back!

We headed off to the Arrow Mill today to catch up with long time muckers: Ian, Ann and Mags (sans Alan). It’s been just over a year since we were last here and it was good to be back!

Yum yum!! A great menu that changes daily.

You can’t beat this ‘posh Pub’ for the quality of its food – and today was no different! It’s a three-star hotel, but feels like it should be at least four! What’s not to love? The diet begins on Monday! (again!) . Just a pity about the journey home that took almost an hour and three-quarters! Just 66 miles, and ‘Friday traffic’ I guess .

Next get together? December at ‘The Countryman in Daventry’.

We drove to the Rose & Crown Bistro in Yardley Hastings today to meet up with Chris & Gill and Steve & Denise for Lunch.

It was our first visit and came highly recommended (although this was our second attempt as we cancelled on the 24th April, because I was down with a cold and Ann’s leg was troubling her again!)

It was worth the wait, and although the Pub didn’t look that special from the outside, as soon as we were seated, the menu told a different story – plenty of choice with some unusual options (Salmon & Crab Burger or Korean Short Rib anyone?). Looking around, there were plenty of seats both inside and out – and filling up fast – clearly indicating this was a popular place for its food offering!

They had certainly done well in the Food & Drink Awards over the past three years!

It was a gorgeous day out there, but we opted to sit inside – in the cool! The meal certainly didn’t disappoint! Attractively presented and full of flavour, we were impressed from the start. The service also punched well above its weight, with bonus points for the attentiveness they gave to one of our party who was Gluten AND Dairy intolerant.

It was a great experience all around, and we’re sure to be returning there again! .

When we left just after 3pm, the temperature was at 27℃ and rising, so our decision to sit inside was a good one!

Today, we caught up with long-time friends Ian & Ann and Alan & Margaret. Our eatery of choice today was a return to The Countryman in Staverton Village.

Here we are again at what’s turning out to be one of our favourite ‘out-of-town’ Pubs for eating! We must have been here around half a dozen times since we moved to Northamptonshire, and it has never disappointed us.

For us, it was a slightly torturous route TO the Pub. For reasons unknown, the IONIQ6 we have on loan took us possibly the longest route ever and we just made it by our table time of 12.30 in just over the hour!

Again, we were meeting up with long-time friends and ex-business colleagues as part of regular three-monthly catch-up – we were last here back in March with the same crowd, and it was so good on that occasion, we re-booked on the spot!

Too much choice!

Once again, they got everything right today – great service and great food all round!

It was fab to see everyone, and we had plenty of time to catch up with what we’d all been doing since we last met. Next get-together? September, at the Arrow Mill in Alcester.

We haven’t been here for AGES – today, we returned to the Montagu Arms, voted “Best Traditional Pub in Northamptonshire” in 2022.

We met up with longtime friends, Mick & Jane (postponed from 4 April!) for a catch-up and a meal. Looks like the last time we all met here was back in 2009, but that does seem a long time ago and Mick thought that it must have been more recent than that!

Judging by how full the car-park was when we arrived, in those intervening years, the Pub had clearly retained its popularity. Once inside, we received a nice warm welcome and were soon shown to our table.

We were soon seated, where it was obvious what the car park had already hinted at – the Montagu Arms was enjoying a busy Friday! And it was only 12.25! The menu looked inviting, and together with their Specials Board, it was hard to decide what to try, but we raised our game and soon placed our order. Other things that haven’t changed much here in 15 years? (Popular Pub, good food, great staff and a massive car park) was the complete absence of a mobile signal, so thank heavens for their wi-fi. . Maybe it was STILL 2009!!

The restaurant was continuing to fill up. The area where we were, probably only seated around 30 people, and there were already 20-plus others doing exactly what we were doing, and enjoying lunch and a drink on warm(ish) Friday! Great food followed, with very generous portion sizes too!

In addition to the amazing food, the service was excellent too, and we all agreed that this would be a good place to return to in the future – hopefully, before another 16 years has passed! .

We said our goodbyes and whilst Mick & Jane headed home, we headed for Tesco’s near home for a small weekly top-up shop (living on the edge, that’s us two!)

Tonight was a welcome return to The Tollemache Arms. The last time I was here was in June 2019, and since then, it’s had a makeover through a crowdfunding campaign where they smashed their target of raising 30k by amassing 33k in just 4 days!

We picked up Bev & Jules for 7pm and headed for The Tolly (as it’s known locally). On arrival, their large car-park was packed, meaning the Pub was too! We squeezed up to the Bar and after ordering drinks, we were soon shown our table.

They certainly seem to be eating early around these parts – the Restaurant was packed! Service was swift, though, and we were soon looking through their menu. Straightforward rather than inspiring would be a good description of tonight’s offerings, and it all looked tasty.

It was great to see a Pub with so much atmosphere, and it was clear it was a popular choice. For me though, it was hard to work out where the money raised had been invested – everything looked the same (and that’s a compliment) as it has always done. Nice too, that the staff were all in ‘Tolly Livery’!

What a great way to spend a warm(ish) Summer’s evening! . We dropped B&J back at their and stayed up until 10.15pm! (Party Animals, ehh????? )

Today was an opportunity to meet up with some of the Old Croydonians Association Committee from my days as their Chair (2010 until 2016).

It was one of those increasingly rare occasions when I took the train to London from Kettering to St Pancras International (I don’t get out much these days!). Roger met me as I exited the barriers at St P, and then it was the short hop to Blackfriars plus a brief walk to The Doggett’s on Blackfriars Bridge. That short final hop allowed us to begin the mammoth catch-up of what we’ve both been up to, since we last saw each other (around two-plus years ago!)

The Doggett’s was a regular watering hole for me back in the late 80s as part of my day job (although Ann and I had dropped in here for another OCA event back in February! ) and it was good to be back with its all-round views across the Thames. Roger and I headed for the Bar and grabbed a table by the window that looked across Blackfriars Bridge.

Bob and Valerie joined us soon after, completing the foursome, and we were soon nattering. They had both recently celebrated a ‘milestone’ birthday, and today was partly about a joint celebration, especially with Roger’s also just around the corner! I was (politely) reminded that I was the youngest (at the tender age of just 68!). It makes a change these days to be the baby in the room!

To use a current phrase, we could be described as a ‘Coalition of the Willing’ as collectively, we’d all been the driving force behind plenty of OCA successes during my tenure on the Committee. It felt fantastic to see everyone together again. The last time we were like this, we probably had an important agenda in our hands! Today, it was just great to be simply enjoying each other’s company!

The only other important piece of paper was the Menu… and it didn’t take us long to decide!

The Doggett’s is famous for its pies – and who were we to break with tradition!

Could we squeeze in a Dessert?

Of course we could!

What a thoroughly enjoyable day together! Oh, and a free Easter Bunny for each of us from Valerie!

The good weather continues! So, it was a drive over to The Carrington Arms for an assembly of the Northants Nutters aka Paul & Sue, Geoff & Rhonda, Rich & Nicki and us two.

I recall visiting this watering hole ‘back in the day’ when I was working. It was a central(ish) location to meet with my work colleagues arriving from all points of the compass. Today’s journey was slightly more challenging for many of us due to local road closures and some re-routing due to the pending construction of some 5000 houses! .

The Carrington Arms is NOT ‘just another Pub with steak on the menu’. It boasts its own separate steak counter serving locally raised Bedfordshire Beef! Vegetarians need not apply! . Somehow, we all managed to resist these ‘custom build’ meaty treats (available by the ounce, all types, all sizes and any thickness!) . I can only speak for my choices, but the Pie was packed with flavour and perfectly presented! (today’s Blog, sponsored by the letter ‘p’!) .

We tried, but the Desserts were just too tempting! Ann chose the Cheese, whilst the rest of us succumbed to the sweet stuff! The Tiramisu was popular and came in a jar! Delicious!!

Collectively, by the time it came to settle the bill, we all thought the meal had been one of the best we’d had in recent times.

The only thing left to do was to have an afternoon snooze head home! Wow! Great food, Great location and of course, great friends! Here’s to the next one!

Today, a welcome return to the Olde Victoria – our local – to meet up for lunch with long-time friends, Richard & Pauline.

The last time we four got together was June last year (also at the Olde Vic!), and it was good to catch up. For the first time EVER (20+ years!) we couldn’t get into the car-park opposite, as it was already full! This required me to venture into uncharted waters, just past the Pub – as had many others – judging by how few spaces were left in the side roads. We do like ‘living on the edge’.

We’ve never had a less-than-brilliant experience here, and today was no exception. However, despite the late improvement in the weather, it still wasn’t warm enough to even consider eating outside.

The Burgers are a particular favourite of ours here – and the Chips are the best anywhere! . So for us two, it was perhaps the obvious choice of the ‘Olde Vic Wagyu’ variety (with Chips, of course!)

Although the usual lightning-fast speed of service was a little ‘off the pace’ today, it was, on the whole, a very pleasurable experience. The waiting staff were as friendly and helpful as ever, and our taste buds enjoyed their usual treat! We had plenty of time to catch up with everyone’s news, but had to skip Dessert because I was on the clock for a meeting in Rothwell at 2.30. It was good to see Richard & Pauline after all this time, and the Olde Vic didn’t disappoint.

Today, we caught up with long-time friends Ian & Ann and Alan & Margaret. Our eatery of choice today? The Countryman in Staverton Village. Last time we were here was in November, 2022 with Ian & Ann, celebrating their Golden Wedding.

After a slightly mystifying route to the Pub (Sat Nav took us the LONG way around via the M1) we arrived just before midday – and their smallish car-park was already 90% full! We took that as a GOOD sign!

We received a very warm welcome and shown to our table. Alan & Mags arrived shortly after, followed by Ian & Ann making our lunch party complete!

After a quick natter, it was time to consult the Specials Board and the Menu! And neither disappointed! I’ve probably been here around half-a-dozen times in the past 20 years and it’s never been better than it was today. Not only was the food presentation superb!, every dish was delish!! The staff also worked their socks off and were extremely attentive throughout. Such a rare treat these days to get all of these at the same time in the same place!!

All-in-all then, the Countryman punched well above its weight – and on the strength of that, we REBOOKED for a return here for our next get-together.

We met up with Mick & Jane at The Wheatsheaf in Titchmarsh for Lunch today.

We were last here (again, with Mick & Jane) in April 2022 and it was good to be back. This used to be our go-to Pub/Restaurant when we first moved here (we must have visited close on 50 times!), but it went through a phase some years ago, where the food and service became somewhat ‘average’. Since then, we found a few other venues to take its place, but happily, in recent years, it’s returned to form.

Actually, the service was a little sluggish. I think the staff were all very willing, it just felt that there wasn’t enough of them – no menus were offered whilst we sat in the Bar! (the usual practice). In the end, we gave up waiting and headed for our table.

Ahh, menus! That helped! Happy days, as it all looked very enticing. By the time the food arrived, we were ready for it!

No problem with the taste – it was all very yummy, but disappointingly, my Mash was cold (however, the flavour of the Pie made up for it! ) and I certainly felt that the experience lacked a certain ‘something’. Overall then, the slightly lacklustre service and the food presentation took the shine away from the overall experience, but it didn’t stop us from enjoying each other’s company and comparing notes about recent – and future – holidays!

Based on today, I think we’re going to put The Wheatsheaf ‘on hold’ for a while, as there are plenty of other eateries we can try in the area! . A real shame!
