These days, the abbreviation ‘ATM’ is an everyday part of our lives (and maybe even bigger in Greece, at the moment!). But, ‘back in the day’ (and what now seems like a lifetime ago) when I was working full-time for Sainsbury’s, it meant something quite different – Area Training Manager. In my duties of looking after branch training, I covered the ‘Romford’ patch (which meant Southend to Great Yarmouth), whilst four colleagues dotted around the UK covered the then ‘Areas’ of ‘Coventry’, ‘Bromley’, ‘Woking’ and ‘Uxbridge’ – carving up the Sainsbury Empire into manageable chunks of fifty-or-so Branches.

So, today, was quite special as I met up with two of my ‘opposite number’ from all those years ago: Paul, ATM of Coventry Area, and Geoff, ATM of Uxbridge Area. We all now live quite close to each other, and so it was pretty easy to find a mutually convenient watering hole. We chose Hobson’s Choice in Kettering, and spent an extended lunch reminiscing of training-days-long-gone! Three hours later, we’d made a valiant attempt at trying to remember who-was-who, and where-are-they-now – but we’d only really scratched the surface!

Cue a perfect excuse for another meet in the not-too-distant future!

I travelled down to London today to catch-up with Sally B and Diana D. Mostly social, but we did talk a bit of business too! Thanks for lunch Sally – Carluccio’s was scrummy.

Whilst I was in St Pancras International, I took the opportunity to slip into ‘geek mode’ and see if the phone would lock onto 4G. It did – and the upload and download speeds were very fast indeed, (although I didn’t have time to measure the speeds accurately, they were definitely faster – no lag at all when loading internet pages with graphics, and sending/receiving email was virtually instantaneous). Last time I was this geeky was back in 2006 when I first experienced 3G whilst in Croydon.

Come on O2, ‘be more dog’, when is 4G coming to Kettering?

Judging, Pussy and the Plasmas – no, not a Cowell-esque moment for a feline rock-band with a preference for protons, but a snappy title for today’s activities!

The day began with me dropping Ann at Kettering Station so she could re-visit John Lewis in Leicester and make a judgement on bedroom furniture, carpets and wallpaper (the office-to-bedroom transformation continues at pace!). An hour or so later, I kidnapped Bon-Bon and dropped her into Patsy’s for an emergency de-tangle and comb-out. For some peculiar reason, her fur – and not Biscuit’s – had become knotty and completely tangled just in the short period since our last regular visit. Weird!

It’s only about an hour’s job to ‘service’ Bon-Bon. 10 minutes patiently combing and de-tangling – and 50 minutes to find a continuous supply of plasters for Patsy!

Bon-Bon + Comb + Water + Bath = All Hell Breaking Loose!

Whilst the blood-bath got underway, I dropped into the newish Waitrose up the road simply because it had to essentials for Saturdays – good coffee and lots of plasma TVs on show!

Job done! – and it was then back to the Station to pickup Ann and then continue with the demolition of the Home-Office.

David and I made short work of the office transformation today. Within an hour, most of the office storage furniture – a bookcase, two filing cabinets, two printer stands and one of the desks had been removed and deposited in the resident super-skip.

Now all was needed was somewhere to put all the stuff that came out of the  storage!!!

…and a serious tidy-up!

…and finally that’s all there is to show for 23 years of consultancy!

The end of an era!

Phase II starts in the next fortnight – Plasterers, Plumbers, Electricians and Decorators!!!

OK, after years of constantly below-par broadband speeds here, I finally ‘bit the bullet’ and did something about it.

For as long as I can remember, it seemed like everyone else (apart from the rest of the neighbours in our immediate area) were getting faster connection speeds than us.

When the houses were built 20+ years ago, they made no provision for the ‘information super-highway’ and recently, the mighty Virgin confirmed they had no plans to change things – even though we occasionally get mailshots from them promising us Bolt-like speeds.

BT have been strangely quiet, and even Sky wouldn’t sell me their broadband package because of the (low) speed. 

The simple truth is that, for broadband-by-phone, we live too far away from the Exchange. On a good day, I might just get a 1.25 Mb/s download here, but as the work-day progresses, it just gets slower and slower – and many of our neighbours are languishing with speeds even slower than mine. Technology can put a robot on Mars, but it can’t get Tynan Close a 2 Mb/s broadband connection! It’s soooo sloooow that services like iPlayer and YouTube sometimes won’t run at all on our TV.

Currently, it takes almost a day to download a 60 minute episode of Mad Men!!

Mad!!!!!

Prior to looking at alternative ways to receive broadband, I carried out a speed test. The result below, is the BEST I got over a six hour period from Demon Internet.

Download speed: 0.81 Mb/s

Upload speed 0.38 Mb/s

Preparing for Changeover
So, what did I do? Well, a quick Google search revealed a broadband service delivered by satellite. The company I chose is based in the UK (that’s  a bonus!), and is called Tooway. They offer a number of speed packages – I chose the 8Mb/s, as I’m pretty certain that will meet my business and personal needs. There are faster options available – right up to 18 Mb/s at the time of writing, and a slower one (2 Mb/s) if you’re on a budget. 

The process with Tooway was very straightforward. Call them, pay the upfront costs for: installation, hardware and your first month’s fee – and the ball is rolling. OK, unlike some other internet providers, you’re not going to get lots of add-on goodies like a free calls bundle and free access to wireless when out-and-about, but what you DO get, is a promise of a reliable and fast connection that doesn’t rely on where you live. Nice one!

A Few Day Later…
Having ordered the product over the phone (you can also order online), a few days later, two packages arrived containing all the hardware. A few days after that, an installation company called to arrange installation. You can do-it-yourself, but I’d recommend leaving it to the professionals. It’s not a difficult job in itself, but aligning satellite dishes is something most of us won’t have much experience in! Just remember that it means another dish on your property, and sometimes you might need permission. If your residence is restricted, Tooway do provide an option to receive your TV through their dish.

Installation Day
On the day of the installation, it all went pretty well. The Installers arrived slightly earlier than expected – and that turned out to be an advantage because it took them slightly longer to ‘point’ the dish. Depending on where your house is, you may be limited on suitable locations for this essential piece of metal – it has to be able to ‘see’ the satellite and there shouldn’t be any visible obstructions like trees or tall buildings in the line of sight.

A few hours later, everything was up and running. It’s worth remembering that the installers will only configure the modem to work and confirm your connection is working. It’s down to you to connect the modem to the router (which Tooway sell) and make any adjustments to the settings on your PC. In short, don’t expect the installers to touch your PC at all.

Any Good?
Oh yes! Everything is working as it should. I didn’t notice much difference with normal ‘surfing’, but downloading and/or streaming is a smooth and speedy process. Downloading Sky Movies is now a breeze, so is watching iPlayer – and I can even look at Facebook and Twitter on my TV – how sad is that!

As a quick test, I downloaded a 120 minute movie from Sky and it took just 23 minutes – and because of the faster download speed, Sky let’s you start watching it before the download is finished – in fact the film was viewable within about three minutes. Perfect for a film addict like me.

Here are the results of the BEST speed tests carried out over a two-hour period for the Tooway setup – remember I’m on an ‘8Mb/s down’ and ‘2 Mb/s up’ package.

Download speed: 8.4 Mb/s

Upload speed 1.9 Mb/s

Just compare these to the broadband-by-telephone results above

I’d say that was a fantastically good result – 10 times faster downloads than the previous setup.

Hats off to Tooway. The service has been excellent, there’s an efficient customer service team and the technical help and advice (not that you’ll need much) is spot on. It’s also nice to be able to talk to real people, rather than spend ages trying to get through to a faceless call-centre. Call Tom on 0844 874 0600 if you have the need for speed!

This has definitely been one of my better decisions of 2012!

PS. Only the satellite is connected to Tooway, I’m not a relation of any of the staff, nor part of their organisation – just a VERY satisfied customer!

Here we go then… deep breath…

• 7. 45am – Lee to the local Parcels office to pick up mystery parcel. CHECK
• 10.00am – Front path and side path pressure washed. CHECK
• 11.15am – OCA Magazine final design, final proof read and signed-off for printing. CHECK
• 12.00 noon – Truckloads of little jobs to sort relating to work. CHECK
• Ann and Lee sorting out the cats for their six-weekly ‘service’. CHECK
• 5.00pm – Down to Lee’s to disconnect the fridge/washing machine/remove the curtains and track and finish off her packing. CHECK

6.40pm – Phew! What a day, but the packing now all done and Lee officially moves out Monday when the storage guys turn up! So, it’s ‘bye-bye’ 3 Avondale Mews for the last time – the bailiffs are repossessing it on Friday on behalf of Santander.

By way of relaxing, we decided to sit down and watch one of my recent purchases on Blu-ray DVD: ‘Narnia – Voyage of the Dawn Treader’ – only I couldn’t find it (I must have lent it to someone!). Instead, we went for ‘Mulan’, a DVD I’d bought last June, and never got around to watching. It came with great reviews, so we were eager to see what it was like. Trouble was, as I inserted it into the player, I spotted that it only had two language tracks – Mandarin, and err, Mandarin, and even with sub-titles, it demanded quite a bit of concentration. Still, a goodish film if, overall, a little long.

Remember when Sunday was the day of rest? No, me neither! More’s the pity!

Ann spent most of the day in the garden trying to rescue us from the ever-invasive weeds and then planting out bulbs for the Spring. Meanwhile, I was in the office trying to get ahead for the week because I’m in Eskilstuna (where?) in Sweden, from Tuesday until Friday. Best of all though, Lee was in the kitchen (in between ODing on Star-Trek movies), getting lunch prepared!

I’m not sure where this year has gone. One minute, I’m crying in my lager watching the World Cup, and then, whoooooosh!, it’s only eight weeks until Christmas!!! Somewhere between now and then, we’ve got a week’s holiday, and I’ve got another two business trips to Munich.

Luckily, all-in-all, we seem to be pretty well-prepared. Ann’s cracked most of the Christmas shopping and we’re 97% through writing all the Christmas cards.

Anyone in favour of a THREE-day weekend and four-day working week?

Yes, me too!!!!

Most of us have more than one PC these days – you’ve probably got one at home, and the other is your laptop or netbook. On each of those PCs you are probably using email at different times for different things. I’m the same, and the major frustration for me, is that some emails that I’m working on, or I’ve sent, are on the home pc, whilst some are on my Netbook.

Wouldn’t life be great, if I didn’t have to remember which email is where, because the two PCs stayed in ‘sync’ with each other? Step-forward then, a piece of software called syncing.NET. Install it on each PC, set-up an account, choose which folders within your email programs that you wish to keep in sync (inbox, drafts, sent items etc.) and after an initial copy of the raw data, everything then syncs beautifully, silently, quickly in the background without any further intervention from you.

If that’s not enough, in addition, the program also syncs files across PCs as well as your Contacts, Appointments and Tasks (if you want it to). Brilliant!

For a while now, my business blog has been sitting happily on a WordPress, domain (WordPress provide our free blogging facilities).

However, for visitors, it must have seemed a bit strange to suddenly be whisked away from the main SPA Ltd site, to a page hosted elsewhere.

I’ve therefore been thinking about how, technologically speaking, I could give the appearance of hosting the blog on my business web-site, rather than on the WordPress domain. From a branding and marketing point of view, I guess doing so, is logical for all parties – most of all, my business customers.

Then, in a flash of inspiration, (I don’t get them that often!), I wondered if domain-mapping might be the answer. It was, and a quick phone-call to my web-host, this very useful page on the WordPress site, and an annual fee of $12, has now allowed me to simplify things all round and achieve my aim.

I drove up to Peterborough to meet up with Angela C. She’s running a Workshop there tomorrow. She doesn’t often get this far north :), so it was good to catch up.

We went to Prezzo‘s in Cowgate. It was pretty quiet when we arrived but soon got busy. Food was OK rather then great. The starters came within what felt like 30 seconds of us ordering them – and mine was cold! Mains were hot and very tasty – I had butterfly chicken breast with a gorgonzola and cream sauce with a side of potato gratin whilst Angela had a fish salad.

I wanted to get home to catch-up with Ann and her latest news after seeing the Barrister, so we missed out desserts and coffee. Angela’s voucher came in handy – the bill came to just 25 quid. I dropped Angela back to her hotel and headed home. I got in just after 10pm.

I travelled down to London with Denise for the last LNG Meeting of 2008.

Denise ran a session on Project Management whilst Luke and Philip talked us through a rather good management profiling tool from The Good Boss Company.

The venue was Sam’s office just off Piccadilly Circus.

The meeting finished around 2.30 which gave me plenty of time to get to St Pancras and catch a train. I caught the 3.30, but at Bedford, the train was halted, and they announced there had been a fatality at Wellingborough. So, I got off at Bedford Station and Ann picked me up. She had a good journey there and a good one back – we were home by 5.45.

Ann didn’t feel too well and decided not to join the neighbours for Paul and Julie’s joint birthday bash.
