A Sunday of Two Halves

Reading time: < 1 minute...

A day socialising today – and just like the World Cup, made up of two halves!

First half: 12.30 – Paul and Sue came round for Lunch…

It was a gorgeous day weather-wise and Ann ‘pulled out all the stops’ in the kitchen for a mouth-watering three-courser…

Smoked Mackerel on a bed of Watercress Horseradish Potato Salad & Spiced Beetroot…

Roast Chicken…

Cinnamon Rice Pudding with Black Cherry Compote…

Second half: 3.45pm – Round to Tom and Julie’s to socialise and reflect on England’s match against Panama. The match had kicked-off at 1pm, but none of us (and I don’t count myself as a soccer-expert, but many of the ‘gang’ are!) could have predicted the result! I’m sure I’ll re-read this B|log in years to come and think it’s a typo, but the score finished at…

England 6, Panama 1

Yep, that’s SIX goals by our national side. I can’t recall, if ever, we’ve scored that many before, in ANY match, but especially in a World Cup game!!  I think we’ve even won the Cricket against the Ozzies too! Happy days!

Most of the gang were there: Tom , Julie , John, Trish, Paul (sans Karen), Dave (sans Rosi), Julie & Al plus Georgina with many of her friends. We didn’t discuss the match much, preferring instead to enjoy a beer, or three in the continuing fantastic weather.

We stayed until about 7.30, leaving most of the others there to soak up the last of the Sun.

Film Night: Black Panther

Reading time: 2 minutes...

Black Panther 4K UHD

If you like your super-hero movies – and also cats – this then was the perfect combo! Tonight was movie-night at ours with the recent release of Black Panther (on 4K UHD* of course!)

Joining us: Jo and Janet with a few nibbles and some drinkies too!! – another perfect combo! Janet brought up a rather new Gin – Seville Orange!

It goes without saying (but I’ll say it anyway!), the FOOD and DRINK was top-notch, but what about the Film?

For me, the origin-story movies of the plethora of these Marvel’s super-hero outings, always seem to enjoy a better narrative – less full-on battles/violence/SFX – instead, more emphasis on a straightforward back-story. So, if you’re new to all of this peeps-in-tights stuff, before Black Panther, maybe try whetting your appetite on Captain America – The First Avenger and/or the more recent Wonder Woman – I don’t think you’ll be disappointed!

Back to tonight’s presentation then, this was the origin story for Black Panther, Marvel’s first black super-hero, and here’s a short summary of the plot.

After the death of his father, T’Challa returns home to the African nation of Wakanda to take his rightful place as King. When a known enemy suddenly reappears, T’Challa  – as King and as Black Panther – gets tested to the full, and where the future of the whole Wakanda nation is threatened…

A good old-fashioned ‘good-v-evil’ yarn then! – and it turned out to be a really good story! Great acting, stunning cinematography, a well-crafted soundtrack that made the best use of our multi-speaker set-up and finally, just the right amount of SFX to make it all believable. The deliberate NOT-by-the-numbers plot development kept us guessing, and as normal for Marvel’s movies, it was worth fast-forwarding to just after the credits to snatch a sneak-peak of what looks to be good signs for a Black Panther II

From Dubrovnik via Kettering to Paris!

Well not quite… read on loyal Reader…

What a treat! Our good friends Mick & Jane who we’d last bumped into in Dubrovnik – as you do – invited us to join them today for lunch at the rather swanky Paris House Restaurant for lunch. The restaurant is located on the Woburn Estate amongst 22 acres of Deer Park – and it made for an impressive entrance..!

Who knew? – not only do Michelin make tyres, they also give out stars for Restaurants. This may only have one, but it was still pretty good! Smile

A six-course meal followed, with an optional extra course of Cheese (which we declined, based on the predicted imminent expansion of our waistlines!).

Phew! We made it to the Pineapple Cake and it was all a thoroughly enjoyable experience with our taste-buds given a complete workout during each Course. Top marks for the Service and of course, to the Chefs, who clearly had every intention of delighting us! What an experience!

Although you made need to take out a second mortgage to cover the Bill, it’s one of those places that has ‘special’ written all over it – and just perfect for a unique celebration of any sort.
