Pre-Easter Break: Day 5 (Tuesday)

Reading time: < 1 minute...

A beautifully bright morning that seemed to contradict the general weather forecast – lucky for us!!! It’s our penultimate day here at the Cottage, so we’re going to cram in as much as we can into our day.

The Town Hall?

To start with, we’re off to Marlborough. Parking was easy as it was literally in the centre of the town. We had a good look round and managed to bag some bargains along the way – lights for the nautical room, a dress for Ann and some really nice looking Easter wrapping paper. After a statutory coffee break, it was off to West Kennet Long Barrow – An ancient burial mound constructed around 5000 years ago – impressive stuff! (even if the walk there was miles!!!!!)

Next stop – the oldest White Horse at Uffington  the oldest one in the UK (some 3000 years old). It was difficult to photograph the horse – you might just be able to see it above the notice in the photo below.

We then drove to Wantage, birth place of King Alfred, where I put Lent on hold (pastry is a banned substance!) and we tucked into lunch at The Bear. Ann had the home-made burger whilst I tackled the rather massive venison pie. Both the service and the lunch were excellent!

Who burned those cakes?

Suitably stuffed, it was back in the car heading back to the Cottage. The weather had stayed dry, but just as we got in, the weather broke and it started to rain – perfect timing! The forecast tomorrow is also rain, then rain, more rain and very cold, so we’re going to head home half-a-day early.

It’s been a great stay in this part of the UK. The weather’s been kind to us and there have been lots of really interesting places to visit. Back to reality tomorrow though!!!!
