Cuba – Day 0

Reading time: < 1 minute...

John dropped us over to Bedford station this afternoon, and we jumped on a direct line to Gatwick. I think this was the slowest train we’ve ever been on! Still, it didn’t really matter as we’re not travelling until tomorrow. Two hours later we arrived at the Hilton Gatwick (where we’d also stayed back in December 2009) for our overnight stay. We met up with Ralph and Karen, who’d driven all the way from Matlock, had a quick natter, before deciding what we’d do next.

Gatwick Hilton – Reception

After a quick freshen up, it was down to the Bar for a swift pint before booking a table in the Restaurant for our first evening meal of the holiday.

On the dot of 7pm, we were being seated in the Restaurant – “Amy’s”. We were all pretty starving by now, and looking forward to what the menu had to offer. Actually, it was all pretty impressive in terms of choice, and well presented too! The only thing that let the whole experience down was the service – it varied from pretty good to non-existent. Still, we’re on holiday, so maybe time to just chill-out and ‘go with the flow’!

We take the 12.15 Virgin flight to Cuba tomorrow, where they’re five hours behind us. As I mentioned elsewhere, the internet is a relatively new concept in Cuba, with only about 5% of the population ‘online’, and where there is a connection (such as hotels), it’s all a bit wobbly!

So, it may be a few days before the next blog appears!

The weather forecast for the week ahead is mixed – hot and humid in the mornings, and rain in the afternoons.

See you on the other side!
